Sir, – I would like to express my thanks to Brian Boyd for his thoughtful reflections on the tragic death of Amy Winehouse (Home News, July 25th).

I was particularly pleased to see him challenge the myth about great music needing the “tortured soul”, and for reminding us of the sad reality that addiction is no respecter of status or stardom. Take away the glamour and the lifestyle and addiction is still an ugly, destructive condition.

Our thoughts are with Amy’s heartbroken family, and with the many families who find themselves – through no fault of their own – in the same sad situation today. – Yours, etc,
