Sir, - I warmly endorse every word of Willie McCarter's letter about the late Prof Basil Chubb (May 16th). I can personally vouch for the openings he provided for mature students whom he considered were serious about their studies and had something to offer.
Willie mentions Basil's love of fishing - "Chubb of the River" he jokingly called himself. His great loves, of course, were his wife and daughter Katie, whom he idolised and to whom I extend my sympathies.
Working nearby at the time I used to meet them regularly in a daily walk in Herbert Park. Even a passing chat with Basil provided uplift. He retained that West Country charm, lack of affectation or self-seeking, and down-to-earth integrity. Ní bheidh a leithéad ann arís. He would have raised a sardonic, quizzical eyebrow at that. - Yours, etc,
