BERNARD BROWNE,
Madam, - February 21st marks the anniversary of the death of a remarkable United Irishman, Col Edward Despard, who was executed for high treason for conspiring to stage a coup d'état in London. His linkages with Robert Emmet are worthy of further study, as Mountrath-born Despard was a pivotal figure in the late 18th century revolutionary Ireland.
Are there any plans to commemorate this remarkable Irishman in the bicentennial year of his death? - Yours, etc.,
BERNARD BROWNE, Old Ross, Co Wexford.
