Madam, – In this week of James Joyce’s 70th anniversary are there any readers who would support a petition requesting an amendment to his plaque outside his former address in rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris, on which part of the inscription reads: “James Joyce, écrivain britannique d’origine irlandaise . . .”? It was heartwarming to see a plaque finally erected outside the address where Joyce completed Ulysses – and full marks to the Residents’ Association for that – but would Joyce really have described himself as a British writer? Surely there has been some sort of misunderstanding? Perhaps the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport could liaise with its French counterpart and maybe even offer to finance the necesssary remedial work if the Residents’ Association is in agreement? – Yours, etc,
