Sir, – I refer to a letter published on July 11th. I heartily endorse the sentiments expressed by the writer, Charles Hayes.
As a founder member of the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement in 1964, and in due course Kader Asmal’s vice-chair for many years, I can attest to the prodigious work accomplished for human rights in both Southern Africa and Ireland by Kader and his beloved wife, Louise.
They were a selfless and indefatigable team who never ceased to inspire all who joined the movement.
Recalling with gratitude the invaluable support which The Irish Timesgave to the anti-apartheid struggle, I am hoping you will permit me space to inform Mr Hayes and all surviving members and friends of the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement that it was my privilege to represent them at the public memorial service for Kader held in Cape Town city hall on June 30th. A capacity crowd of 1,500 paid due tribute to a much-respected politician in a moving ceremony which was shown live on state television.
A memorial event will take place in Dublin in early autumn to celebrate the life of a true humanitarian, who contributed so much to real democratic values in Ireland and in South Africa. – Yours, etc,
