Madam, — Please allow me to congratulate your obituarist on a finely written reflection (Obituaries, July 31st) on the life and career of Peter Hart.

It was perhaps appropriate that someone who spent his life analysing the causes, nature and extent of violent conflict in Ireland during the 1916-1923 period should have been born on Armistice Day 1963.

I first met Peter at a conference in 2003 and remember him as a caring, generous man whose wit and good humour enhanced those conferences we both attended and conversations we had over the past few years.

As well as his partner Robin, mentioned in the obituary, it should also be noted that Peter is survived by his parents Anne and David, brother Stephen, sister Susan (Stephenson Yang) and their children Peter and Stephanie. Yours, etc,

FRANK BOUCHIER-HAYES,
