Madam, – Anita Curtis suggests renaming Archbishop Ryan Park as Bridget’s Park (February 7th).
But does this go far enough? After all, Bridget is more commonly known as Saint Bridget, therefore the park would retain a religiously associated name.
I propose that Dublin City Council consider naming the park Andrew Madden Park, as a mark of recognition to the first person in Ireland to have gone public (in 1995) about his abuse by a member of the Roman Catholic clergy, and who has since formally left the Catholic Roman Church.
This would properly ensure that the cloak of “misguided deceptions”, as Ms Curtis puts it, cannot be forgotten nor airbrushed out of Ireland’s history. – Yours, etc,
