Renewing the Republic

Madam, – Methinks Gerry Adams has learned nothing

Madam, – Methinks Gerry Adams has learned nothing. His call for a united Ireland (Renewing the Republic, Opinion June 22nd) rehashes all the old tired and failed nationalist clichés and hackneyed shibboleths.

He blandly states that “Equality is for everyone”. I wonder if Mr Adams accepts that unionists have the same equal right to self-determination as us nationalists.

As long as we succumb to our primeval urge for a united Ireland every generation will produce some hotheads willing to use force to achieve it.

Of course, just like Mr Adams and Martin McGuinness, they will eventually come to realise that you cannot force a million unionists into a united Ireland.

Unfortunately, by then the current dissidents may have destroyed another generation. A united Ireland must remain firmly off the agenda until an overwhelming majority of unionists request it.

Mr Adams may have left the Provos behind, but his mindset is as dangerous as ever. – Yours, etc,
