Renua Ireland’s call for flat tax

Sir, – Lucinda Creighton ("A flat tax would see everyone play by the same rules", Opinion & Analysis, October 5th) argues that a flat tax of 23 per cent would be fairer than our current progressive taxation model because it would also entail the abolition of various tax reliefs that benefit higher earners. So why not just abolish the tax reliefs?

Ms Creighton also fails to account for the fact that for the rich citizens of this country, most of the money they make each year is not from income, but from assets taxed under capital gains. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Is this “new politics” or just good old-fashioned “auction politics”? Renua’s proposals could have come straight from Jack Lynch’s 1977 playbook. – Yours, etc,
