Sir, - Viewing the proposals for a new monument, I shudder. Surely the appropriate monument should be an Irish round tower? In keeping with the mentality of most of our city fathers, this tower could be complete with central heating, fitted carpets, PVC windows and myriad aerials for mobile phones, telecom connections, gardai, traffic control and TV broadcasts. Neon adverts should bring in some revenue.
Such a tower would recall our past and also illustrate what we have done with it. The top floor could be used as a luxury bar-restaurant for TDs only. Surely they deserve some reward for their interest in Irish heritage. - Yours, etc., Dermot C. Clarke,
