Sir, – On reading "Storm Desmond to cost State millions, says Minister" (December 16th), I saw the flying of a Government "kite" regarding a possible levy on policyholders to compensate flood victims for property damage. If the Coalition thinks that it can shift responsibility to the already over-levied public, then it can kiss goodbye to my vote in the upcoming election. – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL GAVIN,
Cork.
Sir, – I think now would be an opportune time to drain the Shannon planners and county councillors of their authority to grant planning permission for buildings on flood plains. – Yours, etc,
SEAN McNALLY,

France.
Sir, – Is this the only country in the world where rain falls in millimetres and river levels increase in inches? – Yours, etc,
DERMOT O’ROURKE,
Lucan,
Co Dublin.
