Responding to flooding crisis

Sir, – Most Irish rivers are monitored by either the OPW, the EPA or the ESB. The OPW and the EPA allow the public to view their river level and flow data on their websites. Aside from ad hoc press releases, no such online facility is provided by the ESB. Water levels for many of the bigger rivers, including the Liffey, the Lee and the Shannon, are not publicly available online. It is also impossible to view the data on release flows from the ESB’s dams in real time. Before investing millions in new flood warning systems, the Government should start by lifting this veil of secrecy and order the ESB to publish the existing data as it is measured. – Yours, etc,

DAITHÍ POWER,

Bishopstown,

Cork.
