Sir, - We have been told time and again that this is a war between civilisation and terror, a war to protect our way of life and our civil liberties. Is it?
The city of Kunduz in the north of Afghanistan is surrounded by the Northern Alliance with thousands of Taliban soldiers, as well as foreign fighters, under siege. The US has ruled out any possibility of US soldiers taking any prisoners of war.
So the US, a "civilised nation", is violating the Geneva Convention and is basically aiming either to bomb these fighters or have them executed by the Northern Alliance.
Is this the civilisation this war is trying to protect? May be we need a war to save ourselves from US imperialism more than anything else. - Yours, etc.,
Dr Azra Mahmud, Riverwood Grove, Dublin 15.
