Sir, - Since most of my "clinical life" was devoted to dealing with tuberculosis, I was naturally intrigued by Dr Reville's article of July 1st. He refers to the weird treatments for the disease before the cause was discovered. Drinking fresh milk in the milking parlour was reasonable and, since goats were known to have a natural resistance to TB, their milk was preferred.

A bizarre extension was to sleep with a buck goat for six weeks (making the Cure Dr Logan `82) How the time was determined is not clear.

As Dr Reville rightly points out, in this era when potent drugs are available, one of the greatest dangers is non compliance In some centres in the US, patients are paid to attend the clinic to be observed swallowing the tablets. Yours, etc., Roscam Park, Galway.
