Sir, – Further to "Kelly orders review of building regulations" (April 3rd), here we go again. Just when we have a system that will give confidence to new house purchasers, the Minister for the Environment, on some anecdotal evidence of inflated costs (you cannot introduce a new certification and inspection system and not expect to incur additional costs) decides to review the system and proposes to dilute it. The Building Control Amendment Regulations were introduced to ensure that Priory Hall does not happen again.
I would urge the Minister to leave the certification and inspection system in place and not head back down the slippery slope of light-touch regulation of the building industry. – Yours, etc,
KIERAN GALLAGHER,
(former Deputy City
Architect, Dublin City
Council),
Churchtown, Dublin 14.
