Sir, - I see that Brian Maye (December 1st), having earlier distorted the content and nature of my book Birth of A Republic, now tries gracelessly to wriggle away from these distortions as best he can - at the same time shooting himself unerringly in the other foot by presuming to instruct the Editor of The Irish Times on how and what he should publish.
Elsewhere in his desultory letter Mr Maye selects (from 158 books mentioned in the select bibliography of Birth of A Republic, 32 of them post-1980), two classic commentaries to which he refers scathingly as "outdated". Then, to make a point of his own, he proceeds to cite an even earlier work.
Mr Maye has ably and repeatedly demonstrated that neither relevancy nor logic is his forte - but really! Enough is enough. - Yours, etc., Eoin Neeson,
Blackrock, Co Dublin.
