RIDING FOR THE RECORD

SUZY QUIRKE,

SUZY QUIRKE,

Sir, - Congratulations to National Hunt jockey Tony McCoy on his marvellous achievement in breaking Sir Gordon Richards's 1947 record of 269 winners in a season earlier this month. Racing enthusiasts may be interested to know that in 1923 my grandfather, Martin Quirke, set an Irish record for the most flat winners ridden in a season, 86, that stood for a similar period of time (49 years). His record was broken in 1972 by Johnny Roe with a single extra winner. - Yours, etc.,

Suzy Quirke, Warrington Place, Dublin 2.
