Madam, – The ruling by the High Court in the Lissadell case is indeed welcome (Home News, December 21st). It rarely happens that the rights of private property take second place to public rights of way in this country. Well done Sligo County Council. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Rights of way over private property make sense where, in the absence of such rights adjoining property would be landlocked and/or access to a significant public amenity would be made excessively impracticable.

Formerly, many rights of way came into being to facilitate a society where people walked or cycled and where using the public road would have involved an excessive detour.

Those days are gone; neither have I seen it suggested that anyone’s life would be ruined if they woke up and found they didn’t have 24/7 free access to the grounds of Lissadell House.
