Madam, - When Peter O'Mahony (August 18th) says that citizenship by birth cannot be revoked, unlike citizenship by naturalisation, he is telling us how he would like it to be. The truth is that any sovereign government can if it so wishes change any law that it considers harmful, unsustainable or against the common good and has a duty to do so. It should act in accordance with the democratic process and accept the wishes of the majority.
If this were to happen in this case and a referendum were to be called I feel the current citizenship laws would be rejected by the vast majority of the Irish people who care about the future of their children and the sort of society that they will have to live in. That they are not being given the chance is a poor basis to say they cannot do so. - Yours, etc.,
