Rights of people with disabilities

Sir, – Four years ago Ireland was elected to the UN Human Rights Council on the back of a number of pledges by our most recent government, including one to ratify “as soon as possible” the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

That government failed miserably to honour its pledge. Perhaps our new Government would restore our country’s reputation by ratifying the convention at the earliest possible date.

The convention, adopted by the UN 10 years ago this year, has been ratified by almost all UN member states. – Yours, etc,

Dr ARTHUR O’REILLY,
