Madam, - The beleaguered communities in Cork and Meath deserve the sympathy and support of the entire nation in their struggle for democracy, justice and a safe environment.

Planning permissions for huge outdated incinerator projects are being rammed through despite well researched evidence that they should not, and with interference in important democratic checks and balances.

Why would anyone have confidence in the EPA's independence when Laura Burke, until recently Indaver project manager, has been appointed to its board, or in the objectivity of an EPA oral hearing in which the agency would stand as judge and jury of its own action in granting a licence?

Indeed, why should our communities be driven to further expense presenting evidence and bringing in more expert witnesses when the findings of last year's excellent Bord Pleanála oral hearing on the Indaver application were ignored along with the recommendations of the highly competent presiding inspector?
