RISE IN POSTAL CHARGES

RONAN McGLADE,

RONAN McGLADE,

Madam, - On return to work on Monday, following the Christmas break, I received the new postage rates from An Post. As a publisher, I mail a lot of magazines to the UK market each month and was shocked to find that has increased from 91 cent to €1.50. This will have a serious effect on my business and could possibly force me to look at delivering to a mailing house in the North. I'm sure I'm not the only company looking at this option.- Yours, etc.,

... ... * ... * ... * ... ...

Madam, - I was greeted on Monday with the new prices at my post office and requested the little booklet to study them. The old prices still exist, exactly as before, but now they are officially labelled "economy" - second class, in other words.

As most of us have had experience with An Post taking days to deliver stuff just down the road or sending it to the wrong address, we already knew it was a second-class service. So what the new prices amount to is a surcharge for providing a "priority" - read "reasonable" - service.

Clever. Whether or not it changes anything remains to be seen. - Yours, etc.,
