Madam, – I have just returned from a weekend in beautiful Donegal. With a week not gone, the enormity of the Inishowen tragedy was palpably and visibly absent among groups of boy-racers in cars cruising and accelerating to their perceived audiences within and without their cars. As they thought we were admiring their go-faster stripes, we only stared at the fragility of their lives and others’. They did not have the insight to be embarrassed at their behaviour in this week of loss.
Change must come from among their number. Boys do not have to become men in all respects and all at once – such is life. But we must expect them to become men when driving. The cost of not doing so is too much.
We all like to feel that the enormity of sadness this week must have some positive bearing. From what I saw, nothing has changed where change matters most and the next tragedy is but a chance away. – Yours, etc,
