Madam, - Kitty Holland's article on road deaths caused by unsafe surfaces and inadequate road signs (Life Features, January 30th) reminded me of an occasion when I was called to administer the Last Rites to an unfortunate person killed in a road accident that had occurred because a "Yield Right of Way" sign was obscured by overgrown bushes.
I complained to the local authority and the bushes were clipped down. Two years later, the same bushes, with renewed growth, again obscured the same sign.
On quite a few occasions I have noticed on many roads in Ireland, even on motorways, road signs partially or totally obscured by overgrown shrubs. Even on suburban roads in Dublin I see signs that are almost invisible because of adjacent trees or ESB poles.
My question is: Is there a person or persons in local authorities with responsibility to ensure that vital road signs are visible to ensure the safety of road users? - Yours, etc,
(Fr) CON McGILLICUDDY, Grace Park Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.
