Sir, - Kevin Myers, not for the first time, draws attention to various anomalies and inconsistencies in our speed limits and road signs (An Irishman's Diary, January 7th). At the end of the piece he despairingly states that he expects no response from the Department of the Environment. Regrettably, he is quite right.

In January 1998 I wrote to the DoE naively putting forward some suggestions which I thought might contribute to road safety by reducing the levels of confusion and frustration caused by inadequate signposting, inconsistent road markings, anomalous speed limits, absence of lay-bys etc. The reply, which I received some six months later, made it quite clear that, whatever the DoE is responsible for, it has nothing to do with the roads. Every suggestion I made was a matter for some other agency and that was it.

Kevin Myers need not fear. Nothing will happen. - Yours, etc., M.D. KENNEDY,
