Madam, - The report in your edition of September 24th on the wonderful project completed by the women of Bonane includes a reference to the origin of the name for the river Sheen as Oisín's river. In Irish this is Abha Oisín. Perhaps Kerry County Council, for I presume it is responsible, could now remove the awful and meaningless cod-Irish translation "An tSín" (meaning China?) from the Sheen Bridge. I am neither a scholar nor a fluent speaker of Irish but this sloppiness insults me.

The sloppiness is not confined to Kerry. As he travels on the Headford Road near Galway the Minister for Gaeltacht, Rural and Community Affairs met signposts proclaiming several different versions of the Irish name for Annaghdown. Is any of them correct? And would the Minister like to comment? - Yours, etc.,

DENIS HEALY, Devon Park, Salthill, Galway.
