Sir, I should have known that it would take a Kerryman to rock the complacent political establishment to its shaky foundations. The whole country now knows where Mr Joe Higgins, one of the very few politicians who stands up for the poorest in society comes from.
To listen to his opponents in the main parties trying to dismiss him as a one issue crank candidate, says more about the insecurity his rivals feel than it does about the modest Mr Higgins, who accepted his narrow defeat (victory?) graciously and with dignity.
During those dark days for socialism with witch hunts by the Labour Party against people like Joe, little did they think that their new found conservative images would have such short term benefits. Way to go, Joe. Yours, etc., Glengarriff Road, Bantry, Co Cork.
