Madam, - If the Dublin waste-to-energy plant gets the go ahead this autumn from An Bord Pleanála and the Environmental Protection Agency, Dublin will be well on the way to achieving the very high recycling target of 59 per cent set out in the Dublin Region Waste Plan. (Recycling is currently at 30 per cent and rising).

We will extract electricity and district heating from 25 per cent of Dublin's waste and will reduce our dependence on landfill to just 16 per cent. The European capitals with the highest recycling rates all have waste-to-energy plants using incineration, which is a tried and tested technology that works economically and practically all across Europe and elsewhere in the world.

- Yours, etc,

M. TWOMEY, Assistant City Manager, Dublin 8.
