Madam, – Congratulations to Fintan O’Toole, Ireland’s leading journalist, for his article on one of Ireland’s leading bankers (Opinion, May 11th). I suggest that he widen his scope to encompass the other luminaries in a series of articles to be called “The O’Toole Report”. I guarantee that it would be better than any official report. – Yours, etc,
Madam, – I have no problem with Peter Sutherland including himself in the “we” when he refers to the wider Irish community. In his role as patron and chair of the Ireland Fund of Great Britain he is very supportive of the work that Irish organisations do in Britain to alleviate the plight of those people who emigrated from Ireland years ago.
Too many of them now find that they are in need of some kind of support and this fund has raised millions to help these vulnerable Irish people living in poverty in England.
I’m not well informed regarding Mr Sutherland’s business dealings as outlined by Fintan O’Toole (Opinion, May 11th). But in our contact with him, we found Mr Sutherland to be a decent Irish man who has supported his community at home and abroad. – Yours, etc,
