Sir, – Tucked away at the bottom of page 6 of Saturday's Irish Times is a sign of the Government's reluctance to buy into the norms of accountability. Minister for Health Leo Varadkar, referring to the mismanagement of the health service, specifically the trolley crisis, blustered that "a head" would have "to roll or there is no accountability".
Now the Minister rows back by saying "that he didn't want to get into blaming particular individuals" as it would send the wrong message ("Vardakar admits heads will not roll", October 3rd).
So what message, with an election in the offing, is this political timidity sending?
