Sir, - Your report (The Irish Times, March 17th) of the appointment of the Chief Constable of Kent, Mr David Phillips, to oversee the RUC investigation into Mrs Rosemary Nelson's murder notes that the Kent County Constabulary investigated the Metropolitan Police's handling of the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry. Your report does not go on to say that Mr Phillip's Kent Constabulary found there was no evidence of racism among the Met's officers.

The subsequent MacPherson report found that the evidence of widespread racism had been ignored by the Kent Constabulary.

I trust that Mr Phillips will be more successful in his latest brief. - Yours, etc., John O'Shea,
