A Chara, - Dr Edward Walsh has suggested an iconic cross-border project to proclaim to the international community that the shooting is over (The Irish Times, February 15th).
His proposal of a twin city around Dundalk and Newry is creative but, unfortunately, it would add to the over-development of the east coast. It would not contribute to a productive spatial strategy nor to the balanced development of the island, either demographically or economically.
I think we should look to a more practical proposal.
The railway routes of the island already reach Sligo in the north-west and run from Dublin to Belfast to Derry in the north. A round-Island rail route could be created by continuing the existing railway link from Belfast to Derry, through to Donegal Town and Sligo.
This new connection between towns and cities of the north, west and south is practical and achievable. The AIR route could become one of the great rail routes of Europe for tourists, allowing them to stop off at various places on a planned itinerary and, of course bring vital tourism revenue to the north and the north-west. It would also, of course, provide an alternative and comfortable transport option for ourselves.
This project is affordable and attainable. It would be an ideal celebration of the accomplishment of the peace process and be a visible icon of our recent economic achievements. - Is mise,
