Madam, - I don't understand the objections to the Miss UCD beauty pageant. I hold a degree in Women's Studies and have considered myself a feminist for many years. I realise there have always been contradictions within feminist academic rhetoric, but it is agreed that feminism is about the empowerment of women. It is not about obeying the dictates of über-feminists.
In the 1970s and 1980s, liberal feminists demanded equality with men. "No, not yer man who empties the smelly bins at night - the men in boardrooms!" Nowadays we clearly articulate that we want every woman to be able to develop her potential and avail herself of opportunities. So who says, "No, not beautiful, intelligent, bilingual young women"?
I say: "More power to Ms UCD. Good on ye!" - Yours, etc,
