KEVIN O'SULLIVAN,
Sir, - Pat McArdle (May 4th) may rest assured that Queen Elizabeth II will not be travelling the length of Ireland to celebrate her half-century on the throne. Moreover, she will not be travelling the length of Britain in that capacity either. The Tudor Queen Elizabeth I of England never ruled Scotland, so the present Queen is strictly Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland when she crosses the border.
Curiously, she also worships in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland whereas in England she is of course the top Anglican. If this kind of flexibility were adopted in Ireland we could anticipate visits south of the border from Father Paisley and Taoiseach Trimble. - Yours, etc.,
KEVIN O'SULLIVAN,
