Sir – After listening more closely than usual to the excellent reading of the 1916 Proclamation on Sunday morning last, my doubts about the proposed invitation to members of the British Royal family to the ceremonies in 2016 have increased. The document is so written as to preclude any politically correct attempt to make it acceptable to sensitive royal ears. If it were to be read again in the regal presence in such ringing tones, all eyes would surely turn to the discomfited visitors to see their reaction. Do princes blush? Yours, etc,

Sir, – My family left Ireland in 1974. We had intended to return for the 2016 commemoration. However, after reading the story in your newspaper (April 20th) we have decided that if a member of the royal family is on the reviewing platform in 2016 that would represent a travesty and we will definitely not be there to witness such an oddity. Yours, etc,
