A chara, – Monday was a wonderfully atmospheric day on O’Connell Street. What a relief that there was no vain or ostentatious display of military pomp.
This is how the foundation of the Republic should be remembered. Talks, exhibitions, lectures, music and a pedestrianised street flowing with laughter and merriment. Social inclusiveness and the freedom of expression are the real heroes. – Is mise,

Sir, – RTÉ's Road to the Rising event, while having much to admire, seemed to ignore something. Many turned up on O'Connell Street, dressed in the finery of the time.
However, where were the tenements or the people who were forced to live in squalor at the time?
They were represented on a printed photo where we could read about them.
It seemed like a Dublin 4 production for Dublin 4 types.
Will it be more of the same next year? – Yours, etc,
ANTAINE O’DUIBHIR,
