Sir, - I walked recently along the Grand Canal in Dublin from the Barge pub to Portobello Bridge. The canal had been drained and was full of rubbish. I saw six supermarket trollies, 20 to 30 parking cones and countless numbers of cans and bottles. I also noticed the rotting carcass of a sheep at the side of the canal. I could not believe my eyes.
I have lived in the Ranelagh area for years and have noticed how badly the canals have deteriorated in that time. I have come to the conclusion that the canal is now a dump in the heart of the city.
I hope Dublin Corporation will start to maintain this waterway quickly. It is becoming a nightmare. I will live in hope. - Yours, etc.,
