Rules Of The Road

Sir, - I am not surprised that, as a people, we have acquired a reputation for being rather "quaint".

Sir, - I am not surprised that, as a people, we have acquired a reputation for being rather "quaint".

There is at present a section of the Upper Glenageary Road (Between the Glenageary and Mounttown roundabouts) where the speed limit depends on the direction in which you happen to be travelling. For motorists coming from Dalkey it is 30 m.p.h. whereas, if you happen to be travelling in the opposite direction, it is 40 m.p.h. As if this is not bad enough in itself it also creates the Gilbertian situation in which the speed limit on a network of roads, accessed from that section of the Upper Glenageary Road, depends on the direction from which you have come.

Another example of our "quaint" ways exists on the Stillorgan Quality Bus Corridor. Despite the fact that it has been in operation for many months now, it seems, from the signs displayed, that the responsible authority is unable to decide whether the rules apply to it from Monday to Friday or from Monday to Saturday.

Against this farcical background it is hardly surprising that so many motorists have such little respect for speed limits and other rules of the road. - Tyours, etc., M.D. Kennedy (Mr).
