Sir, To help calm the fears of Ireland's republicans that one day the British Government will bow to the pressure of market forces and decide that so far as Northern Ireland is concerned, enough is enough and that another Dunkirk is clearly called for, should not the Irish Government now publicly declare that under no circumstances will it accept any responsibility for running the troubled province unless British taxpayers, give an unequivocal and irrevocable commitment to continue their current multi billion annual subsidy - even if this has to be paid in the new Single European Currency? - Yours, etc.,
