Sir, - Mr Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair has posed the question (June 17th): "Will anyone benefit from this (Aer Rianta) continued monopoly"?
The answer clearly is yes. Obviously those in comfortable executive positions in the monopoly, but particularly politicians, who use the monopolies to give the appearance of good state management by way of high profile PR events, especially at election time and when they are under media scrutiny on other issues.
State monopolies in Ireland (An Post, Aer Rianta, Telecom, to name a few) are too dominant in this small economy and must be dismantled and face competition so that our country can prosper in a free market. The Minister, with responsibility for publicly owned companies, needs to do a lot more before she can get to the top of the class. - Yours, etc., Brian Goff,
