Sir, - The honour and excitement of hosting the Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2005 will be wonderful, but this historic occasion is somewhat diminished by the choice of club awarded the honour.
Beautiful though the K Club is, it has no natural characteristics of Ireland. It is an American-style parkland course in the midlands.
A lot of the interest and charm of golfing in Ireland is the challenge of natural links courses. The wildness and beauty of so many of these around the coast have immense attraction and surely, the world-renowned Portmarnock must rate very highly among them. - Yours, etc.,
A. Minch, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
