Sir, - I would like to join Senator Maurice Manning's outrage at the IRFU over its handling of crowd safety at the rugby international against New Zealand.

For some reason, all entrants to the North Terrace were forced to use the one set of steps up into the terrace. Remarkably, this happened to be on the opposite side of the pitch to the Havelock Square gates. As a result, a dangerously crammed crowd had to squeeze through an extremely dark and narrowing passage.

At the top of the concrete steps, people were initially blocked as they tried to make their way through the crowd. All it needed was one minor push backwards from those already on the terraces, or God forbid, a minor fire, for this to have become an appalling accident.

There are four entrances to the North Terrace. What on earth was all this about? - Yours, etc.,
