Sir, - Now that autumn has arrived, and with it, the lengthening dark as winter approaches, banks and post offices all over Ireland could do their customers a nice favour by freely distributing light reflectors. Every autumn in Finland, the banks and post offices do this. The reflectors are tied to clothing with a provided string, and as the wearer walks, the dangling reflector catches any light directed at it from traffic. The Department of Education could also distribute reflectors to rural schools.
It would be a relatively inexpensive gesture, and it could help save the lives of pedestrians this winter. - Yours, etc.,
Niall O'Donoghue, Narva, Finland.
