SCHOOLS' RANKINGS

FRED TUITE,

FRED TUITE,

Madam, - I note that your "Teacher's pet" column praised the good work of the Farmers Journal with their publication of how many students from schools got into universities. What ever about "good work" their statistics were wrong. Our own school was said to have only one student at UCD from the class of 2002 whereas in fact from our own survey we have 16, an error that not only affected our own "ranking" but that of all of Co Laois. But, in addition, they did not include the four of our high-achieving students who went into teacher training colleges and the 36 others who went on to degrees and diplomas in the Institutes of Technology. Leaving out these other students is like counting only the goals in a hurling match and ignoring the points. - Yours, etc.,

FRED TUITE, Guidance Counsellor, Heywood Community School, Ballinakill, Co Laois
