Sir, – I read in An Irishman’s Diary (July 9th) a reference to Erwin Schrödinger’s famous cat’s experiment/paradox, without any explanation of what exactly the “cat experiment” is.

The reason I am curious is that growing up in Clontarf (Oulton Road) in the 1950s, I was aware of a somewhat cranky “foreign national” neighbour whom my mother used refer to as “old Schrödinger”. His place of residence was well noted because he owned a particularly nasty mongrel (dog) and we as children were often fearful of the loud barking as we passed his gate. Never a cat in sight! Did we miss something? – Yours, etc,
