Madam, - The extradition of an Irish citizen to a state whose government runs Camp Delta in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and is responsible for Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, and covertly kidnaps suspects (usually Muslim) for transfer to Guantanamo or to a country where prisoner torture is routine must be opposed by our Government.
Capital punishment and brutal prisons are the lot of a large number of poorer US citizens. If there is a case to answer, then Sean Garland of the Workers' Party should be tried in Europe.
Until the US regains respect for international law, Irish governments should not and must not facilitate the extradition of any citizen to the US. The "secret" human cargoes at Shannon Airport are an image of national cowardice that shames me. - Yours, etc,
Cllr BILL TORMEY, (Fine Gael), Glasnevin Avenue, Dublin 11.
