Seanad elections and calls for reform

Sir, – Part of Enda Kenny’s “democratic revolution” was the abolition of the Seanad. His attempt failed. It is interesting, therefore, to note the number of former Fine Gael and Labour TDs who are now queuing up to become members of a body they tried to abolish. This is a reminder of the low standards of our last government and, perhaps, a reason why it was rejected so firmly at the polls. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN KENNY,

Dublin 6.

Real Seanad reform is proving slow, but how about a quick first step forward? A stipulation that no-one can take a seat in the Dáil within, say, five years of holding a Seanad seat would at least mean that all members of the Seanad actually want to be there. – Yours, etc,

Sir , – The latest roll of nominations of former politicians for the Seanad demonstrates all that is wrong with the Irish body politic.

Sadly, as I have no vote, I have no way to right this wrong. – Yours, etc,
