Seanad in need of reform

Sir, – Beairtle O Conghaile (May 11th) supports the the Seanad’s abolition as he feels it costs too much. Perhaps the logical thing to do would be abolish all elected officials in favour of a more cost-effective dictatorship. Democracy costs money.

Reform of our upper house is what’s needed! In such turbulent times a house of diverse, directly elected people from the arts, business, sciences and technology is needed to advise the Dáil – a people’s forum reflecting the breath of Irish society offering contrast and opinion to a Dáil comprised of political dynasties and people from a very narrow range of professions, gender and age. – Yours, etc,
