Sectarianism in football

Sir, – Whilst I agree with David Adams’s opinion that James McClean should have handled his decision to play for the Republic differently (Opinion, May 17th), I must challenge his assertion that the IFA has bent over backwards to ensure that Catholic players are welcome. Windsor Park always has been an intimidating place for Catholics and still is, if marginally less so.

Flags and anthems matter here and if the IFA is really serious it would follow the example of the the Scottish and Welsh associations whose flags and national anthems reflect their national identities rather than their Britishness.

The IRFU has at least recognised this issue with Ireland’s Call and if the IFA moved to a flag and anthem reflecting our shared Northern Irish/Ulster identity it wouldn’t solve the problem but it would go a long way.

The Belfast Agreement offered young players like James McClean a chance to play under a flag with which they are comfortable. Until the IFA does the same Mr McClean and other Catholics will continue to vote as well as play with their feet. – Yours, etc,
