Madam, - Having followed the trial in detail, I was very moved by the grief, pain and frustration in Brian Murphy's mother's speech to the court. Thank you for publishing the full text.
Throughout the twists, turns and subterfuges of the trial Judge Michael White gave an example of facilitation, impartiality and care.
So, what went wrong? Yes, drink was a big factor. But denial and a culture of collective amnesia ensured that skins would be saved and equivocation smothered justice.
This creeping evasion of responsibility has been slowly poisoning our society. Gone are the days when we were taught to "own up and take our medicine". We, as parents and teachers, need to re-establish the role of trust, truth and responsibility for ourselves and our young people. We must show them, not just tell them.
It would be a help if our political leaders co-operated with the very tribunals and party inquiries they set up to uncover corruption and collusion. The young people at Annabels had drink and drugs to "excuse" their amnesia. What have the politicians got as their excuse? - Yours, etc.,
